Sheriff: A bomb exploded in a dumpster near the Parsons courthouse

Authorities have arrested a suspect

PARSONS, Kan. –Labette County Sheriff Darren Einhinger confirms that a person detonated a bomb near the courthouse in Parsons, Kansas.

A Parsons man, 63, allegedly detonated it at around 4:55 a.m. this morning in the dumpster at the Labette County Judicial Center (District Court). It is located at 201 S. Central Avenue.

At 8:00 a.m., officers from the Labette County Sheriff’s Office reviewed the surveillance video. They saw a white man place the device in the dumpster. Authorities later identified the man and took him into custody.

Kansas Bureau of Investigations, ATF Bomb Squad and FBI are in Parsons. Authorities say the debris climbed a block away and they are working to collect the debris.

Law enforcement is continuing their investigation. There were no known injuries.

The sheriff’s office says it will release more details later.
