Shazam! Fury of the Gods New Trailer: Zachary Levi Considers Giving Up His Superpowers
Shazam! Fury of the Gods just got a new trailer. After a brief showing at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. has released new images that reveal important plot beats — a lot — that in some way could mark the end or beginning of the next chapter in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The trailer, which is available in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, looks overloaded. Originally slated for an April 2022 release, the sequel suffered multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ultimately settling for a March 17, 2023 date. David F. Sandberg is returning to direct, of course.
The trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods opens with a voiceover, as Kalypso (Lucy Liu), Atlas’ second daughter, sows a seed in the middle of a baseball stadium. The seed gives birth to a gigantic tree, whose roots and branches extend into the city, destroying everything in its path. “We are at war. We are going to destroy everything,” warns Shazam, the malicious eldest daughter Hespera (Helen Mirren)! (Zachary Levi), at a local restaurant. “The champions of this realm can do nothing to stop us.” The Shazam! 2 then confirms that it’s been “a few years” since young Billy Batson (Asher Angel) received superpowers in the original 2019 film, which was then distributed to his adoptive siblings, who established themselves as the protectors legitimate in the city.

The cast sees only one change – Grace Fulton is returning as Mary Bromfield/Mary Marvel, though this time she’ll be playing both the academic sister and adult superhero form. Previously, this latest, older version was performed by Michelle Brothe. I don’t know how the movie will handle the secret identity side of things. Fortunately, no glasses.
The Shazam! The Fury of the Gods trailer then dives into exposition territory, explaining why the Daughters of the Atlas decided to hunt our heroes. “The children stole the power of the gods,” Hespera explains, while taking her physically handicapped adoptive brother Frederick Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer) hostage. “You ripped it out of our father’s core.” The trailer then turns into a montage of action sequences, with Shazam! charging headfirst into the dragon that Kalypso is riding on – which he calls “Khaleesi”. A Game of Thrones reference? Rachel Zegler’s Anthea, Atlas’ third daughter, makes a much later appearance in the Shazam! 2 trailer and can be seen casting a spell.
“I don’t know how we fight powers like this,” Bromfield says, as the whole town is enveloped in a domed blue shield. At this point, the Shazam! The Fury of the Gods trailer features the big bet, with Batson wanting his powers taken away from him, in hopes of saving the town and his beloved adopted brother. “I spent millennia looking for a worthy champion,” says The Wizard (Djimon Hounsou). “You know exactly what to do.” The trailer ends with some shots from the final showdown, which sees Shazam! battling the aforementioned dragon, as a group of unicorns and other mythical creatures take over the city. Like I said before, it’s overloaded and pretty much gives the whole movie away.
Considered a quality product by the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, as he planned to chart a new future for the DCEU, it’s clear that Shazam! Fury of the Gods will no longer include Black Adam in the fold. New DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have decided not to black adam sequel, which essentially undoes the interconnectedness of the universe that star Dwayne Johnson envisioned.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods hits theaters worldwide on March 17.
