The NRL season is just 10 rounds away and it already looks like Canterbury manager Trent Barrett is fighting for his future.

A 16-6 loss to Newcastle on Friday night puts the Bulldogs at the bottom of the ladder with two wins to their name.

Barrett now has five wins in 34 games since taking charge last year.

Nine’s Danny Weidler reports that the Canterbury board are growing impatient and members are unimpressed with the results on the pitch.

Weidler wrote for the Sydney Morning Herald that Bulldogs head of football Phil Gould will back Barrett and not sack the coach, but pressure could come from above to act if things don’t improve.

“What is worse for the coach is that he has supervised the majority of rookies who are at the club,” Weidler wrote.

“I asked Gould many times about Barrett’s strategy and he was very supportive of it.”

News Corp reporter Brent Read pointed out that board members need to answer to fans and members.

“If they don’t do what these members say, they’re kicked out,” Read told Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.
