Most people’s engagement stories are romantic or at least worth telling, but few engagement ring buying stories are … unless they involve Shaquille O’Neal.
The NBA legend was seen in a Zales jewelry store earlier this week, looking to purchase earrings, when he came across a man trying to afford an engagement ring. Eager to help, O’Neal stepped in and footed the man’s bill.
Naturally, the sweet moment video found its way online and made the rounds on social media.
During an NBA appearance on TNT the next day, the former basketball player explained why he went to the store and said he noticed a guy come in.
“He was so shy and he was like, ‘Hey, how much do I owe for my ring?’ I was like, ‘Man, how much is the ring? “I’m not going to say the amount, but it’s not a lot for me,” O’Neal said. “He’s like, ‘Hey man, I can come back next month and next month,’ like a layaway, he deposits the money. But I was like, ‘Tell your girlfriend I got it. I’ll take care of it.'”
“At first he didn’t want to take it,” he continued. “He’s like, ‘I can’t do this, sir.’ So I said, “Don’t worry about it, I do it all the time.” I’m just trying to make people smile, that’s all.
O’Neal said he didn’t want his gesture to go viral on the video “because I’m not doing it for that,” adding that every time he leaves the house he tries “to do a good deed. “.
This is far from the first time that O’Neal has helped random strangers. Elsewhere in the segment, he shared another quick trivia about a time when he bought furniture for a woman and her daughter.
And last summer, he stopped to help those involved in a Florida car crash.
A sheriff’s spokesperson told the Gainesville Sun at the time that O’Neal “had come across the crash … so he stopped to see if help was needed.” Once the police arrived, he got into his vehicle and left. He did not stand up to receive accolades. He was just a good citizen.
