Asian Cup 2022: New Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has played down his side’s chances at the Asian Cup and said his aim for the tournament is to prepare for the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year. Bangladesh will travel to the United Arab Emirates for the next Asian Cup following a poor run in the game’s shortest format and with Shakib having another shot at captaincy after the end of the three-year reign of Mahmudullah earlier this year. Shakib’s side are drawn in Group B against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka for the six-team tournament which begins on August 27 and the all-around star is keeping his expectations low for the showpiece event.

“I have no goals” Shakib said when asked how his team would perform at the Asian Cup.

“My only goal is that we can do well in the World Cup (T20) and that’s the preparations for that. If anyone thinks I can turn things around in one or two days or someone else will come and change it, then we live in a crazy kingdom. If you are able to think practically, our real development will be seen when the team does the World Cup really well in three months’ time,” said Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan.

Bangladesh have won just two over-20 matches since last year’s T20 World Cup in Oman and the United Arab Emirates and their latest series triumph in the shortest match format came a long time ago. almost 12 months against New Zealand at home.
And although Bangladesh have never won the Asian Cup, they finished second in the event three times in 2012, 2016 and 2018 with Shakib each time.

But the veteran expects no miracles this time around and said patience is needed as the next generation of Bangladesh’s clean ball performers get used to his captaincy style once again.

“You see, we first played this type of version (format) in 2006. Since then, we haven’t had any good results except the Asian Cup final,” Shakib noted.

“We are far behind in this version from then on so we have no choice but to start afresh. When a baby starts to walk (the first) steps are very difficult but little by little things get easier and hopefully we can also start to walk step by step like a baby and then move on,” added Shakib Al Hasan

Bangladesh’s first game in the Asian Cup is against Afghanistan in Sharjah on August 30, before a much-anticipated meeting against Sri Lanka in Dubai on September 1.

Bangladesh squad for the Asian Cup: Shakib Al Hasan (c), Anamul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Afif Hossain, Mosaddek Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Nasum Ahmed, Sabbir Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Ebadot Hossain, Parvez Hossain Emon, Nurul Hasan Sohan, Taskin Ahmed.
