‘Shady Trial Lawyer Pipeline’ gives $17.5 million to pro-Democratic PACs

A group of political action committees affiliated with litigating law firms on the plaintiffs’ side donated $17.5 million to left-leaning candidates and causes after those firms were awarded lucrative government contracts, according to a recent Alliance for Consumers report.

Alliance for Consumers calls this network of PACs the “Shady Trial Lawyers PAC,” and it involves “politicians doling out lucrative public contracts to litigators who donate millions of dollars to liberal political campaigns.”

“There’s a game playing here, where these law firms are rushing in, signing up for sweetheart deals that feed into the political slot machine,” said OH Skinner, executive director of the Alliance for Consumers. , to Breitbart News. “And ultimately those most affected are ordinary consumers and taxpayers footing the bill for political gambling.”

At the center of the Shady Trial Lawyer Pipeline is AAJ PAC, an organization tied to the American Association for Justice, an advocacy group for trial attorneys. AAJ PAC, the Truth and Justice Fund Company, and various justice PACs, are closely tied to plaintiff-side lawsuit businesses fueled by money the companies get from contracts with state or local governments.

The Alliance for Consumer’s previous report focused on the “shady eight” law firms that donated $15 million to pro-democracy groups after winning contracts with state governments.

Between 2017 and 2022, these Shady Trial Lawyers PACs reportedly donated $17.5 million on behalf of Democratic organizations, including $2 million spent in the past 15 months alone.

“One hundred percent of the independent spending they recorded with the FEC went to supporting Democratic candidates for the US Senate. Ninety-nine percent of the total money went to leftist committees, Democratic committees,” Skinner said. “And locating where that money went is equally telling.”

PAC money has gone to far-left groups like America Votes, which prides itself on being “the coordinating center of the progressive community.” Abortion advocacy group Emily’s List has also received hundreds of thousands of dollars from PAC Shady Trial Lawyer.

Another PAC beneficiary is the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, which is headed by former President Barack Obama’s former attorney general, Eric Holder. Finally, the Shady Trial Lawyer PACs have reportedly donated more than half a million dollars to Priorities USA Action, a nonprofit organization that focuses on mobilizing progressive voters.

“Ninety-nine percent of the money goes to democratic causes, leftist causes, super ideological causes, that would be really, I think, offensive and upsetting to your everyday consumer, your citizen everyday people who are doing a bad deal and probably don’t have values that align with where that money is going,” Skinner said.

“This partisan political giving is backed by law firms that hold lucrative public contracts and get big money in the process, money that really belongs to taxpayers and consumers,” the report said.

Consumers and taxpayers are harmed by the one-sided nature of these contracts between governments and law firms. As Skinner explained to Breitbart News, most of these contracts don’t protect state governments and can lead to a state being usurped by a left-leaning city that gives the law firm a better deal.

Skinner said:

So sometimes these law firms can get a contract that says, any prescription drug settlement, you know something very broad, we get paid, even if the law firm isn’t working on the case , even if the attorney general or whoever it is finds a way to get the money back to the state because the company did something wrong and the law firm wasn’t involved.

“So the punch line is long, there are these contracts that cover millions and millions of dollars, and they don’t have an end date,” he added. “You don’t have conflict protection to make sure the state doesn’t take advantage if the law firm has a town or city like a left-wing town.”
