Seth Curry hopes to bring much-missed shooting ability to the Nets

MIAMI — Some thought being married to the coach’s daughter would keep Seth Curry from being traded.

But Curry and his wife had been in the NBA long enough to know better. And neither was exactly shocked when he was dealt to the Nets in the blockbuster James Harden-Ben Simmons trade.

“Some people weren’t too happy, and I think I know who that is,” Curry joked before the Nets faced the Heat on Saturday, trying to snap a 10-game skid. “I’m ready to make the most of the opportunity. I’m optimistic about it. Obviously a lot of talent here, a lot of guys who love the game and know how to play, a great coaching staff and organization. I usually come in and try to fit in right away.

Curry, brother of Warriors superstar Stephen Curry, is married to Callie, daughter of 76ers coach Doc Rivers. With the Harden-Simmons deal in the works for some time, Curry, who was acquired by the Sixers just over a year ago in a trade with the Mavericks, had the idea that he could move up on I-95.

“There are several guys who knew this could happen. And Seth and Callie were clearly informed. … Obviously Ben and then Seth had a pretty good idea that this could happen,” Rivers said.

“They talk all the time. She had the same feeling as me about it, that it could happen. She grew up around the league. I did [too]. I know things can change at any time,” added Curry, who is unable to play for the Nets until Harden passes his physical 76ers.

“I had a feeling that if this trade collapsed, I was going to be part of it. I had been preparing since last week. I’ve kind of prepared my mind for it, and I’m looking forward to the next opportunity. I feel like I can adapt to a lot of different situations: playing with the ball, playing without the ball. I just can’t wait to come here and try to help these guys in any way I can.

Curry will obviously help with his stroke.

Joe Harris’ 3-point percentage is the best of any active player, but it’s questionable whether he’ll come back from his ankle injury this season. So the Nets went out and acquired the No. 2 active player. Curry’s .437 career percentage is fifth all-time, and he’s hit at least 40% each of the last six years.

After averaging 21.0 points on a misprint-like .596 shot in last year’s second-round playoff exit against Atlanta, Curry entered Saturday averaging 15, 0 points, a career high, despite a recent mini-crisis.

After learning to space the floor for Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum in Portland, then Luka Doncic in Dallas and finally Joel Embiid in Philadelphia, Curry is used to the stars and the adjustments needed to play alongside them. Playing with Kyrie Irving (when he plays) and Kevin Durant (once back) will be no different.

“First and foremost, you have two of the best basketball players to pick up a ball. You have Kyrie and KD, who are great at what they do. They get a lot of attention; they do it themselves and create for other people,” Curry said. “I’m trying to figure out how to help these guys.

“Throughout my career, I’ve been someone who’s adapted to different kinds of star talent, whether it’s Luka, Dame and CJ, obviously Joel. It didn’t take long for me to get used to playing with these guys, so I’m just going to try to come in and do what I’m doing and try to do it within the concept of the team.

Curry – a teammate of Irving’s at Duke – is under contract for next season at $8.5 million. But the Nets can extend it into the summer, and it has pretty big support.

“Seth has obviously become a terrific NBA player. It’s a sniper, catch-and-shoot, off the rebound. He’s crafty and incredibly efficient,” Nets coach Steve Nash said, adding that Curry will “help us win.”

After dropping 10 in a row, they need that help ASAP.
