Sergio Ramos backed his current teammate Lionel Messi to win the 2021 Ballon d’Or.
It may come as a shock due to his long-standing relationship with Real Madrid where he spent years as Cristiano Ronaldo’s teammate, but the defender was simply showing a united front.
After spending so many years playing in one of the most heated games in the world against Messi and Barcelona, it’s almost strange that Ramos is now one of his biggest supporters.
Now, however, being on the same side after their summer transfer to Paris Saint-Germain from Real Madrid and Barca respectively, Ramos has lent his support to the Argentinian winning the 2021 Ballon d’Or.
“I see Leo very well here at PSG, he is a very important player in the team,” said the Spaniard. ESPN.
“He’s a unique player and it’s a privilege to have him on the team.
“Yes, I will always defend my teammates,” Ramos said when asked if Messi was his favorite to win the Ballon d’Or.
“And I wish him all the luck in the world.”
According to rumors, the PSG striker has already won the distinction for the seventh time with a document leaked on social media that would have the result.
If he wins, questions will likely be raised given the form of Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski who has had a phenomenal year for the club and the country which has seen him score over 60 goals in 2021.
In doing so, he became the first striker to achieve that remarkable number since 2014, when Cristiano Ronaldo achieved the feat which also won the Ballon d’Or that year.
