  • Senator Lindsey Graham says Brazilian immigrants wearing designer clothes are trying to enter the United States.

  • Graham made this claim to Fox News host Sean Hannity and the Washington Post.

  • However, the photos her spokesperson sent to The Post did not appear to show people wearing Gucci bags.

Senator Lindsey Graham says immigrants from Brazil enter the United States via the Mexican border “wearing designer clothes and Gucci bags.”

Graham made the statement to Fox News host Sean Hannity on Tuesday while criticizing the border policies of the Biden administration.

“We had 40,000 Brazilians coming from the Yuma sector alone to Connecticut wearing designer clothes and Gucci bags,” the South Carolina senator said. claimed on Fox News. “It’s no longer economic migration. People see an open America. They are taking advantage of us. And it won’t be long before a terrorist walks into this crowd.”

Graham reiterated these claims in an interview with the Washington Post on Tuesday, expanding on his statements to Hannity, while also telling the Post what he says he observed during his recent trip to Yuma, Arizona.

“Usually when you go to the border you see people who are dressed really haggard and look like they’ve been through hell,” he told The Post. “This time in Yuma, there were dozens of them who appeared to walk into a hotel and smartly dressed.”

“This is something new. I would advise the Biden administration to do what the Obama administration did and bring them back,” Graham said, adding that he believed Connecticut and two other states he could not immediately remember were “destinations”.

Graham’s office spokesperson Kevin Bishop also provided the Post with additional comments and photographs he said were taken during the trip to Yuma.

“They got thousands of Brazilians over there,” Bishop told The Post. “As Senator Graham noted in Yuma, the luggage looked better than his.”

However, The Post wrote that none of the suitcases in the photos sent to them appeared to be Gucci products. Graham’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.

It is not known where Graham obtained the number of 40,000 immigrants, nor where he got the indication that these migrants were on their way to Connecticut. However, it is true that a record number of Brazilians have been arrested at the southern border of the United States this year. According to customs and border protection data, more than 46,200 Brazilians have been detained at the southern border in fiscal year 2021 to date.

The Wall Street Journal also reported this week that there are middle class migrants coming to Mexico and then attempting to cross the US border illegally. The outlet wrote that this wave of Brazilian migrants might be slightly easier than other refugees, but is likely being pushed to flee to the United States due to the severe economic problems they face in their home country. .
