Senator Chuck Grassley blocks Democrat gun control

Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) on Thursday ended a Democrat gun control campaign, saying it would not prevent gunfire but hinder compliance with the law in exercising Second Amendment rights .

The Guardian notes that the push came from Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), who sought “unanimous consent Thursday to pass the Enhanced Background Checks Act 2021.” The law would expand retail background checks to also include private sales of firearms.

Murphy highlighted the shooting on November 30, 2021 at Oxford High by pushing for the passage of gun control. But Grassley blocked the move, describing gun control as “hostile to legitimate gun owners and legal gun transactions.”

Grassley said: “So-called universal background checks will not prevent crime and turn otherwise law-abiding citizens into criminals.”

The legislation pushed by Murphy was passed by the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives in March 2021. At that time, Breitbart News pointed out that the bill would criminalize an individual who sells a 5-shot gun to a lifelong neighbor, unless that neighbor first undergoes a National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS) check, conducted by the FBI.

Murphy admitted that universal background checks may not have stopped the Oxford High shooting, but suggested such checks “[save] lives, decrease gun violence, [and] decreases violent crime.

Colorado has universal background checks, but Ahmad Alissa, 21, from Arvada, CO, reportedly opened fire on customers at a Boulder grocery store on March 22, 2021. Ten people were killed in the attack.

California also has a universal track record, but southern Los Angeles has seen a 742% increase in shooting fatalities in the first 16 days of 2021 alone.

Giffords’ gun control group notes that “Universal background checks are essential to fill deadly loopholes in our laws that allow millions of guns to end up in the hands of individuals at risk. high rate of committing acts of violence every year ”.
