Senate staffer robbed at gunpoint in Washington, D.C. gun-controlled zone

A staffer for Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) was robbed at gunpoint in gun-controlled Washington, D.C., on Thursday shortly before 8:30 p.m.

The employee was “walking down the sidewalk” when a man approached, pointed a gun in her face and told her, “‘Give me your purse and your keys,'” WUSA 9 reported.

The employee handed him her keys and other personal items and the thief got in her car and left.

The staff member was not physically injured.

Senator Britt released a statement after the incident:

We thank God that she is safe after this terrifying incident, and we are grateful to the Capitol Police Department and Metropolitan Police Department officers who responded quickly and professionally to the scene. It is infuriating and completely unacceptable that an American who is at the Capitol to serve his country cannot safely walk the streets of Washington, DC at 8:30 at night due to the uncontrolled crime in that city. Just look at the police figures: this year, thefts have increased by 68% and motor vehicle thefts by 102%. Local elected officials in the District of Columbia have a responsibility, not only to their citizens, but to the country, to step up and tackle the crime crisis plaguing the streets of the nation’s capital.

On September 20, 2023, Breitbart News noted that House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil (R-WI) warned staffers not to wear jewelry or be distracted on the phone when they were walking through a crime-ridden, Democrat-run Washington, DC. He did this as part of an effort to inform staff of steps they could take to reduce the risks of becoming targets of criminals as crime increases in Washington.
