Selling Sunset reveals what Harry Styles left in the house

It was Anne who ended up sending Harry’s X factor application when he had cold feet.

“People tell me I’m a good singer. It’s normally my mother,” the already flirtatious 16-year-old said when he auditioned for The X Factor in the spring of 2010, playing Stevie Wonders“Isn’t she beautiful” a cappella. “Singing is what I want to do and if the people who can make it happen for me think I shouldn’t do it, then that’s a major setback in my plans.”

Well, they did and they didn’t. Harry didn’t make it to the last group of boys, or even the penultimate group of boys, but the show wouldn’t let him go.

Fatefully, Simon Cowell And Nicole Scherzingerwho was a substitute guest judge Cheryl Colethought to group Harry with other aspiring solo artists Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik And Louis Tomlinson.

“Come on, I’m not gonna take credit for it, but I’m gonna take credit for it,” Scherzinger says in the 2013 documentary One Direction: following our path about his generally uncredited role in catching Lightning in a Bottle. (Louis Walchmeanwhile, was the other judge, the one who, infamously, didn’t get Harry at all.)

It was Harry, however, who came up with the band’s name.

“I thought it sounded good,” he recalled on CBS Sunday Morning in 2017. “We were throwing names around for a little while, and honestly, I don’t know. I suggested it and everyone was like, ‘Yeah, we like that,’ and then it stuck, and it was what it was.”

“We basically just had the idea to do a lot of names,” Zayn said on Hot 97.5 FM from Phoenix in 2012, “and that was one of the first names Harry came up with. ‘just texted and we were like, ‘Yeah, I like that, that’s cool.’ There were a few really embarrassing ones that Liam found… What was the other one? USP—Unique Selling Point.”
