Security questions raised after reporters found Biden’s Venmo account

US President Joe Biden

Joe Biden and Dr Jill Biden’s Venmo accounts were discovered in minutes – and deleted in hours – from reporters at Buzzfeed find the US president on the payments app on Friday.

Although Mr Biden and Dr Biden’s contacts on Venmo are not publicly visible on the app, according to Buzzfeed, he raised national security issues.

Reporters were able to find the US president and the first lady on the app after a report from an adviser to Biden in The New York Times about Mr. Biden sending money to his grandchildren on Venmo.

BuzzFeed “Found nearly a dozen members of the Biden family,” including “the president’s children, grandchildren, senior White House officials and all their contacts on Venmo.”

Officials later confirmed that both accounts had been deleted, according to BuzzFeed, with thousands of people commenting on Twitter about the so-called ‘scandal’.

“Am I supposed to be outraged by a grandpa who sends money to his grandchildren because the tone suggests I should be,” Andi Zeisler.

Twitter activist and user Charlotte clymer added, “Biden uses a Venmo to send money to his grandchildren. Yes, this White House is going from scandal to scandal. “

Others refused to believe the US president was on Venmo in the first place, with a Twitter user, Norah, writing: “I’m just surprised Biden knows what Venmo is, my dad still thinks PayPal is the only way to transfer money online.”

Security experts also weighed in, with Venmo instead facing a close scrutiny of its public interface.

“The fact that you cannot hide your contacts / connections / friends on Venmo presents a risk for all Venmo users,” wrote Eva galperin, the director of cybersecurity at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

The app, which is owned by PayPal, was recently the focus of a federal investigation into Republican Matt Gaetz, who is facing an investigation into whether he violated federal child sex trafficking laws.

The congressman, who denies any wrongdoing, allegedly transferred funds via Venmo to an associate, Joel Greenberg, for “food” and “ice cream” for the girls, according to The daily beast.

Offering a comparison of Mr. Biden and Rep Gaetz, author Meg elison wrote: “Biden and Gaetz’s recent exposures to Venmo are, aside from everything else, a powerful indictment of the obsolescence and failure of the American bank.”

A spokesperson for Venmo said The independent : “The security and privacy of all Venmo users and their information is always a top priority, and we take this responsibility very seriously.”

“Customers always have the option of making their transactions private and setting their own privacy settings in the app. We are constantly improving and strengthening the privacy measures for all Venmo users to continue to provide a safe and secure place to send and spend money. “
