Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin stepped down in January, but hotel accommodation for secret service agents who still accompany him costs US taxpayers more than $ 30,000, according to The Daily Beast.

A review of federal spending data by The Daily Beast showed a $ 15,604 contract labeled “MNUCHIN VISIT-USSS ROOM RESERVATION ST. REGIS – APRIL 2021”, with the report indicating that the money came from the Embassy of the United States in Doha, Qatar.

In a second contract, $ 16,658 was spent on hotel accommodation under “FORMER SECRETARY OF THE TREASURE AT MNUCHIN VISIT – SUPPORT FROM SECRET SERVICES”. The contract overlapped with the first contract and also mentioned the US Embassy in Doha as a source of funding.

According to The Daily Beast, the charges exclude salary, flight costs, and overtime.

Mnuchin was not available for comment when contacted by the Daily Beast on Saturday.

Former administration officials other than former presidents generally do not receive additional protection from the secret services.

However, former President Donald Trump extended full-time security services to his adult children and three senior officials, including Mnuchin, for six months before stepping down, according to the Washington Post.

Other former members of the Trump administration granted security were former chief of staff Mark Meadows and former national security adviser Robert O’Brien, according to The Post.

The taxpayer-funded security service includes former senior adviser Ivanka Trump and her husband, former senior adviser Jared Kushner, as well as Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump and his wife, Lara Trump, and Tiffany Trump.

Trump’s grandchildren are also part of the extension of security details due to their proximity to their parents.
