Sean “Diddy” Combs has been transferred to the same section of New York City prison as Sam Bankman-Fried.

Sean “Diddy” Combs has been transferred to a section of the New York prison where convicted cryptocurrency fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried is being held, sources confirm to NBC News.

This area of the detention center is reserved for detainees who require special protection, three sources close to the case said Tuesday.

Combs, 54, was arrested last week and is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, a federal prison notorious for violence and poor medical care.

Also being held in the MDC’s special section is Bankman-Fried, 32. Manhattan’s top federal prosecutor says he orchestrated one of the largest financial frauds in history, stealing more than $8 billion, the sources said.

The unit is described as a barracks that currently houses between 18 and 20 inmates who require special protection, according to sources, ranging from high-ranking defendants to individuals cooperating with investigations. It is considered a general population area in nature, but with increased security.

A spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons told NBC News: “For reasons of privacy, security and safety, the (FBOP) does not provide information about conditions of confinement, including housing assignments or internal security practices for any specific incarcerated individual.”

Bankman-Fried, known as SBF, was convicted in November and sentenced in March to 25 years in federal prison.

Prosecutors said he embezzled billions of dollars from customers placed with his cryptocurrency exchange, FTX, and also defrauded FTX investors and lenders for the benefit of another entity, Alameda Research.

Bankman-Fried appealed his conviction, and in May the court recommended to the Federal Bureau of Prisons that he be kept at MDC so he could have access to his attorneys even though he was convicted, records show.

Combs was jailed at the MDC last week after being arrested on a federal indictment charging him with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking and other charges, allegations centered on the sexual abuse of women.

Combs was not convicted and pleaded not guilty, but a federal judge on September 17 ordered him to remain in jail pending trial.

The MDC, located on East 29th Street in Brooklyn, has 1,616 inmates in total, according to its website.
