Seahawks win eighth CAA tennis crown


ELON, North Carolina – The dynasty remains intact. And it may not end anytime soon.


UNCW’s young men’s tennis team won the school’s eighth conference title in 13 years by beating Elon, 4-2, in the 2022 CAA Men’s Tennis Championships championship game on Sunday. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon.


The No. 2-seeded Seahawks, 15-8, earned the most important doubles point, then added three singles wins in their fifth straight league game. UNCW has won the CAA crown in four of the past five seasons and won its ninth NCAA tournament appearance with a convincing win.


Elon, the No. 4 seed, finished the season at 15-9 after becoming the first No. 4 seed since 2015 to reach the final by upsetting No. 1 William & Mary, 4-2, in semi final. The Phoenix were the last team to beat UNCW in the CAA Tournament, edging out the Seahawks, 4-3, in the 2019 title game.


The Seahawks have won 14 of their last 15 CAA Tournament games since 2017. UNCW is 38-26 all-time in the CAA Tournament.


In doubles on Sunday, the sophomore tandem n°3 Gabe Hurtado and freshman Trey Mallory clinched the key point for the Seahawks by beating Elon’s Nick Campbell and Nicholas Condos, 6-2. Dillon Gooch and Bekhzod Rasamatov won the first doubles match, 6-3, over Elon’s Daniel Martin and Chung-Han Tsai in first place.


Elon squared the match 1-all at No. 2 in singles when Campbell recorded a 6-1, 6-3 straight-sets win over UNCW David Innocenti. But Seahawk’s first year Trey Mallory 6-4, 6-2 win over Ben Zipay in singles No. 6 gave the Seahawks the edge, 2-1, with four games on the court.


First-year student Harold Huen then beat Elon’s Nicholas Condos, 6-2, 6-1, to make it 3-1, until the Phoenix took the lead when Elon veteran Kyle Frankel edged out Reece Falck7-6 (5), 6-4, leading the lineup, closing the gap to 3-2.


UNCW only needed one win in the last two games on the court and Hurtado delivered. The Bogota, Colombia product rallied behind Elon’s Camilo Ponce, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, in fourth in the singles for his decisive fourth goal of the season and sparked a wild celebration on the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center Course.
