Seahawks host Hawks in Battle Of The Birds

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW’s Boseman Field will host a Battle of the Hawks this weekend as the Seahawks host the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks for a pair of softball doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday.

The first pitch in the doubleheader on Saturday, March 12 will be at 2:30 p.m., followed by an 11 a.m. tee off in the twinbill on Sunday, March 13. All games will be broadcast on FloSports with a booth from Jim Whitmeyer and Tom Lamont on the call. As usual, live stats can be found at UNCWStats.com

The Seahawks (15-3) are riding a five-game winning streak on Saturday after beating St. Bonaventure, 18-0, in a three-game sweep last weekend. The Hawks (2-13), meanwhile, make their maiden trip to Wilmington for the weekend’s four-game slate.

UNCW has a pitching staff that has been dominant in the first five weeks of the season, including freshmen Emily Winsteadwho was named Colonial Athletic Association softball pitcher of the week after whipping up 13 batters last weekend against St. Bonaventure.

The Seahawk spinners have pitched 22 straight scoreless innings and boast a microscopic 0.24 ERA during the five-game winning streak. The staff’s 1.84 ERA for the season is good for 22nd in the nation.

In the batter’s box, second baseman Taylor Vitola leads the team with a .450 batting average to go with 27 hits, the second-most in the conference, while senior Janel Gamache tied for the CAA lead with 21 RBIs in 18 games.

The Hawks enter the Port City after losing three of five Marshall Round Robin games in Huntington, W.Va. last weekend.

A pair of sophomores pace the UMES offensive. Two-way player Tatum Kresley paces the team with 21 hits while catcher Julia Garcia has a team-high 14 RBIs with a home run.

UMES graduate pitcher Nasya Goodman is 2-4 this season with a 2.72 ERA in 36 innings pitched. The Willingboro, NJ product has made 12 appearances, five starts, in the circle this season and recorded three complete games.

After the weekend, the Seahawks hit the road for the second time this season to face North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC on Tuesday, March 15. First pitch at Anderson Softball Stadium at 6 p.m.
