SCEB’s Rivera unhappy with set-piece defense

ISL Season 8: SC East Bengal again suffered a 1-0 loss to Kerala Blasters in a match where the two teams were nearly even. Yellow Army somehow managed to score a header from Enes Sipovic and claim all three points in a hard-fought encounter in the Indian Super League. Rouge et Or head coach Mario Rivera felt they should have been much better in defense to avoid defeat. Follow all ISL 2021-22 LIVE updates only on InsideSport.IN

It was Lalthathanga Khawlhring’s strike and Enes Sipovic’s header that saw the ball end up in the back of the SC East Bengal net. The Rouge et Or are winless in their last five matches in the Indian Super League.

Talking about Rivera highlighted how he thought his team could have at least gotten a single point from the game. “Yes of course. We played very well today, we defended well. We attacked well and we created chances. They didn’t create chances, we stopped all their counter-attacks . But once you get a free kick, you can lose a game. That’s football for you. The goal came from a free kick,” the Spaniard said during the press conference.

“You always have to be better on set pieces. We are not bad from set pieces, we defended well and scored goals from set pieces too. But you can always improve from set pieces,” Rivera added, noting that teams can defend well, but they still need to work on their set piece defence.

Rivera had to make some changes to the starting lineup in this match as Marcelo Ribeiro, Darren Sideol and Arindam Bhattacharya missed out among many players. He highlighted how the Brazilian striker got injured while Arindam and Sideol have a fever and isolate themselves.

ISL Season 8: We should have been better in free-kick situations, says SC East Bengal’s Mario Rivera after loss to Kerala Blasters

“Marcelo got injured in the last game so he didn’t recover in time to play. But for Arindam and Darren, they are resting because they have a fever and are sick. So they couldn’t play. They are in their room and isolated because we don’t know if they can transmit the virus to the players and so we are dealing with it,” Rivera revealed.

Finally, the Spanish tactician reiterated the same by winning the next game despite having few games left in the current season. “Yeah, it’s always the same, we’ll try to win the next game. We don’t think if there are three or two games left. We want to win the next match, we will come stronger. Hopefully we’ll have a bit more luck next time,” Rivera concluded.
