NewsOne’s Deveen Taylor and BOSSIP’s Char Masona introduce us to BunNan BK, a Flatbush establishment run by Nadege Fleurimond that serves plantains in several creative ways.

BunNan BK offers plantain sandwiches that vary from jerk to red snapper, as well as plantain fries, plantain boats, and plantain nachos.

Fleurimond, a proud plantain enthusiast, says her restaurant pays homage to her Haitian heritage while elevating plantains from simple side dish to main course.

“I was tired of plantains being a side dish,” she says before raving about how plantains are enjoyed in many cultures, including African, Caribbean and Latin American. “So I wanted something that would connect everyone and show how similar we are when it comes to food.”

Throughout the episode, our hosts have an ongoing debate over the pronunciation of the dish but luckily for us, Fleurimond is here to settle the problem once and for all.

Are plantains pronounced “plan-TAIN” or “plan-TIN,” asks Deveen.

“It’s plan-TIN,” says Chef Fluerimond of the correct pronunciation. “Tell us mountain or mont-tane? ” She adds.

Very valid point!
