John Ryder flies to Dallas, amid an argument between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders, but there is only a “small” chance that he will replace his British rival.
The Mexican star is just days away from a world super middleweight unification clash, but Saunders is at the center of a heated ring size dispute at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
Ryder was due to travel to America to promote his WBA title fight with David Morrell next month, although he may be ready to challenge Canelo instead in the short term.
“I think it’s smoke and mirrors,” Ryder said. Sky Sports. “I think he’ll get what he wants. I still had to go to Dallas. Eddie wanted me to go there and do some promotion, for my next fight in June, so I was always leaving. But I mean if he calls me I’m going to pack the gum shield and protector.
“Look, I would do it outside the pub for free on a Saturday night, so put some financial motivation behind that, definitely.”
Asked about the likely chance he would challenge Canelo, he replied, “Very small. You don’t come so far in a fight to let him go at the last minute, because of a few feet.
“This is something that should have been settled at the start of the negotiations. One of the first things. Sort your purse, sort the ring, determine if you walk first or second, or something else. It should have been. been tied up for a long time.
“It’s silly that it really happens during fight week. Is it just mind games? I don’t think Canelo is the person to do mind games with, but I think Billy Joe has a few tricks up his sleeve. “
The Londoner, who is due to challenge Morrell for the WBA “regular” title in Minnesota on June 26, doesn’t think his presence in the United States will put pressure on Saunders.
“Billy is his own man, he doesn’t really dance to anyone’s tune and he does whatever he wants,” Ryder said.
“I wouldn’t want to step in and take a day’s pay off from him because they think I’m going there for that.” I’m just going there to promote myself, to get my name out there a little bit for my fight.
“It suddenly occurred to me this afternoon that there is a problem with the size of the ring and I happen to go there.
“Eddie hasn’t made any contact but I take my gloves and boots, because I want to do some pad work while I’m there. I’d be happy to oblige him if he [Canelo] wants to donate a few pounds. “
