The explosion was heard during the first free practice session of the weekend on Friday. A fire broke out at the Aramco site in Jeddah. Black smoke is visible coming out of the facility and can be easily seen from high points in the city.

The smoke was also shown on TV as the cameraman showed live footage during the final stages of the FP1 session. F1 journalist Chris Medland has written on his social media that F1 bosses are “awaiting further information from the authorities regarding what happened at the Aramco site”.

The cause of the explosion is still unclear. This comes days after the missile attack on a fuel depot in the city. After the previous attack, F1 bosses were monitoring the situation very closely. Meanwhile, flights to the city must remain out of town from now on.
Even Max Verstappen thought his car was on fire. He had a word with his crew on the radio saying, “I can smell it burning…is that my car?” ยป It was later confirmed by them that his car was not the source of the smell.
