Sara Cox to become first woman to referee Premiership match

Sara Cox will make history this weekend as the first woman to referee a Gallagher Premiership match.

Becoming the first female referee to be under a centralized contract with the Rugby Football Union in 2016, she became last year the first female assistant referee in the highest level of English rugby.

Cox will break new ground this weekend by becoming the first woman to lead a Gallagher Premiership league game.

She will officiate Saturday in the Premiership champions Harlequins’ first home game against Worcester at the Twickenham Stoop.

Premiership Rugby posted on Twitter: “Kudos to @SaraCoxRef.

“She will become the first woman to referee a #GallagherPrem Championship game on Saturday. She continues to make history.”

The Harlequins are the winners

The Harlequins got off to a winning start in their Gallagher Premiership title defense as an exciting game at Kingston Park saw them beat the Newcastle Falcons 26-20.

Both teams played fast and smooth rugby, but Quins – with Tommy Allan doing his best impression of Marcus Smith to pull the strings of No 10 – managed to get through the whitewash four times against Newcastle’s three and return in London with the five points.
