Punters will be spoiled for choice with the meeting at Sandown this weekend with top class chases and hurdles giving plenty of value.

The Class 2 Novice Hurdle Handicap Hurdle kicks off the proceedings that make Knappers Hill the favorite for Game 1.

The horse trained by Paul Nicholls has a lot of potential and has shown a lot of promise in previous races and won last time out at Newton Abbot where he won by more than three lengths.

Saint Calvados at 9/4

It is just four runners contested by Mister Fisher of Nicky Henderson, Saint Calvados of Nicholls, plus the two just outside the two favorites, Nuts Well and Erne River.

This Grade 2 Chase is contested just under 2m7f, a distance only Nuts Well has won before.

Surprisingly, none of these four top class horses have conquered Sandown before.

But Mister Fisher has come close on this course and this distance before, losing by a neck to King George VI winner Chase Frodo in this race last year.

The horse trained by Henderson has lost 5 pounds since that race and could justify favoritism on that basis alone.

Question marks have arisen since that race, despite having been pulled from two races in Grade 1 company and also being a huge distance behind Fakir D’oudairies at Ascot in February.

However, at Kempton showed promise in the 2nd year on soft ground beating Eldorado Allen.

But the choice of the four should come from the best value for money of Saint Calvados which has run well twice since its wind surgery last July.

All three races came in first year and it was also for Fakir D’oudairies, then Tornado Flyer in the King George on Boxing Day.

This trip should be no problem and returning in a 2nd year where he could dictate the pace should be fine.

Royal Seal at 9/2

It’s another small ground considering the level, but potentially the end of the season could be one too many for some who take a summer vacation instead.

Another horse trained by Nicholls looks promising in this Grade 1 run over 1m7f and that is Greeneteen.

Bryony Frost has been in the saddle for the past year, but with his injury Harry Cobden will take over the reins, having last been on board at the Cheltenham Festival in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Greeneteen didn’t travel as well at Leopardstown losing distance to Everyone For Self in February, but the vet reported a scratch on his left rear stifle which could be the cause of a crash at the end.

Favourite, Nube Negra finished 12 lengths behind Greeneteen at Sandown in December 2021 and has not raced since.

However, in terms of consistency, Sceau Royal stands out for having run well in the last two and should make a better account of third place from last year.

Hewick on 1/22

This is the big highlight of the day the pursuit of Grade 3 on 3m 5f with 15 runners still in the running to take the field Saturday afternoon at 3:32 p.m.

The highest rated Win My Wings is around 6 hours 24 away and gives a lot of weight to the lower rated horses due to his recent hat-trick of wins at Ayr, Newcastle and Exeter.

A 14-pound increase for his latest success makes it potentially too difficult a task, even with that routing win by seven lengths last time out.

As an outside shot, the 22/1 Hewick coached by John Hanlon appeals greatly after winning comfortably at Sedgefield in a Class 2 pursuit over this distance.

Might have needed the race at Uttoxeter in March especially as it was a mammoth task on soft ground over 4m2f under an eight pound raise.

Prior to that he ran hurdles and was very consistent and was only beaten by serial winners.

There is definitely room for a surprise placement or even a win and tons of value at around 20 in the market right now.
