‘Sand Mountain Sizzle’: the Steak Cookoff competition comes alive in Albertville

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – If you like steak, like to grill, and can’t turn down a good old fashioned competition, then Marshall County has you covered.

In a few weeks, on Saturday June 11, the Albertville Chamber of Commerce will host the 3rd Annual Sand Mountain Sizzle Cookoff in partnership with the Steak Cookoff Association. Any entered team can win cash prizes, even if you land 10th place.

The passionate event will take place in the parking lot of the Farmer’s Market behind the Chamber at 316 Sand Mountain Drive in Albertville. Teams from across the Southeast are scheduled to compete in the Tasty Tournament.

According to the Chamber, this year’s contest will be a “double” contest, meaning there will be two separate contests with a chance to win double the prize. The winner of each event can join the World Championship Steak Cookoff Association later this year.

The cash prizes will be:

  • 1st place: $1,000
  • 2nd prize: $500
  • 3rd prize: $400
  • 4th prize: $300
  • 5th place: $200
  • 6th to 10th place: $100

There will also be two ancillary contests, a taco contest and a kids steak contest. Teams can earn the following for both ancillary contests:

  • 1st place: $125
  • 2nd prize: $75
  • 3rd prize: $50
  • 4th place: $25
  • 5th place: $25

Winners of the Auxiliary Competition will also advance to the SCA World Championship competition.

A Jr. Sizzle cooking class will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the Friday before the competition in the Chamber, with three-time world champion Johnny Joseph as the teacher. The course is free but limited to 20 children (from 4 to 15 years old).

Registration for the Jr Sizzle class is done through the Chamber website.

The team entry fee is $150 for Steak Contest A, or $300 for Steak Contest A and B, $25 for Taco Contest, and $25 for Steak Contest for children. Breakfast will be offered to competing teams on the morning of the contest, and local hotels have offered discounts to participating teams.
