San Antonio, Texas Tackles Education Inequity with Free or Reduced Tuition

After taking office, President Biden proposed offering two years of tuition-free community college. After congressional opposition to many of his larger plans, this plan was scrapped.

Efforts have been made at the local and state level to increase college attendance rates by offering free or reduced tuition to students who meet certain conditions, such as living in a designated community or attending a specific school. There are now over 400 such programs across the country.

San Antonio, Texas – which has had one of the highest urban poverty rates in the country – has one of the highest urban poverty rates, started its own project in 2019.
