Saint-Brieuc: once upon a time there was Art Rock, told by its festival-goers – Saint-Brieuc

“A weekend of letting go, which makes a city bloom for three days”. This true declaration of love for Art Rock, the Saint-Brieuc festival, we owe it to Hervé. Equally lyrical, “Une Brioche” describes: “Crowded terraces, reddened and dancing bodies, meetings, discussions that intersect, intersect… That we do not hear, because it is something else that we listen to … Well-chosen words, nostalgic today. Normal. They take us back to a time when a virus that caused the cancellation of an entire festival, two years in a row, was still science fiction.

“Great food and great music”

Among the festival-goers, two things unanimously hailed: the reunion aspect between friends and the atmosphere. It must be said that Art Rock is atypical, even unique: multicultural, in the city center, gastronomy, street arts… “Eclecticism, discovery, open-mindedness…”, as Gurwann sums it up.

“When I was a teenager and I had no money to pay for my concerts, I filled out all the contests possible to win places”.

“A total festival in the heart of the city, an atmosphere that cannot be found anywhere else”, for Henri, festival-goer from the very beginning. “The most beautiful cultural and artistic prism of festivals in France”, launches Lucie, all in subjectivity as a volunteer for the event in 2018 and 2019. Marie confirms: “It is the nicest music festival in the heart of the city”. And shifts: “There is good food, good music, and all that while being able to go back to sleep in your bed at night”. Pragmatic.

Her, her first Art Rock, was in 1996. “When I was a teenager and had no money to pay for my concerts, I filled out all the contests possible to win seats”. Efficient? “In Louise Attaque’s year, I filled out 500 Tub ballots to hope to win. And I won two places. I was too proud ”.

At closing, the bouncers came to evacuate us gently, Mano Solo said: “If you fire them, fire me with them”.

A caterpillar with Mano Solo

Anecdotes, we have received a few more. There is Gilles and his “meeting with Mano Solo after his concert. He came for a drink at the bar and was raving with us. At closing, the bouncers came to evacuate us gently, Mano Solo said: “If you fire them, fire me with them” “. Followed “a caterpillar” and “Breton rap” sung on the forecourt of the Gateway. On the festival’s Facebook page, where our appeal was relayed, Fabienne remembers an “after at the Fût Chantant with Keziah Jones”.

Another nice story, that of Caro, also a regular here, in 2017 at the concert of Romeo Elvis, at 35, she did not know. She recounts “the astonishment to see all these young people knowing everything by heart, the atmosphere that this guy has set. And even if it’s not my style of music, I really liked it […] I stayed right up to the end ”. And the ricochet the next day: “One of the security guys told me that he recognized me: he was in security at Romeo Elvis’ gates. He remembers me because it was obvious that I did not know ”.

“I discovered Taxi Therapy thanks to Art Rock. Now I am an absolute fan ”.

“The memory of a first cooked”

And his heart concert? Therapy Taxi, in 2018. Like this festival-goer, “a Montpellier resident”: “I discovered Therapy Taxi thanks to Art Rock. Now I am an absolute fan ”. In the register discovered, we can cite that of Selah Sue by Marie-Luce in 2010. Or Hervé, about Ibrahim Maalouf: “Tape. A real revelation ”. He also quotes Franz Ferdinand, “the immediate fire in the audience, from start to finish, extraordinary”.

Jeanne Added. (Le Télégramme Archives / François Destoc)

Best concert category, Marie-Luce, again she adored Jeanne Added. Twice, “in 2016 and in 2019”. Henri, it is a legend who marked him: Patti Smith. “An extraordinary voice, the diva, long hair under her cap, spitting hues and dia as usual.” One hour of an unforgettable performance ”. And this despite the driving rain and a scramble with “an olibrius” which almost ended badly … Other names mentioned: Benjamin Clementine, Cirkus, Camille, Catherine Ringer, Suzanne, Deluxe or even, in the register of letters, -M-, the best concert of the so-called… “B”, who conquered him even though he “doesn’t like the musician”!

“The energy around the Lomepal concert, something strong, a little melancholy but at the same time pleasant and very powerful”.

Lomepal, last page

Older memory, that of Cédric, who remembers his first Art Rock, in 1994: “I was 18, it was my first rock festival with my friends. […] I remember those first feelings of communion, impressive crowd effects that I will look for all my life later in other concerts ”. On Facebook, and always on the grand premiere side, Thierry observes, facetiously: “For generations of Briochins, Art Rock will remain above all the memory of a first baked”.

One last emotion? That of Cassandra. It recounts “the energy around the Lomepal concert, something strong, a little melancholy but at the same time pleasant and very powerful”. The artist is cited several times. As a symbol: it is, for the moment, the last page of Art Rock. The last concert of the last edition. In 2019, an eternity.
