‘Sad’ that McCarthy Ouster I and Dems voted to shut down House

On Bloomberg’s “Balance of Power” Tuesday, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) said it was “sad” that the ouster of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as chairman of the House, which he voted for, along with all Democrats who voted, means the House cannot act on important issues.

Cuellar said: (Relevant remarks begin around 24:45) “It’s sad, it’s really sad for the United States. Here we are trying to make the appropriations, we have Ukraine, we have border issues, and within the Republican Party they have this civil war. And it’s just sad. This doesn’t help the country at all.”

He added: “We have the border, we have the twelve appropriations bills, we have Ukraine, so many problems, and everything has stopped now. Nothing can be considered until we have a new speaker. How long that will take, we have no idea. I think the Republican caucus needs to go back and decide among themselves whether they want to move forward on their own, maybe propose another speaker or maybe change their minds. But otherwise, they need to talk to our leader and, like I said, you can’t start a conversation about whether we’ll be willing to do this or that without them contacting us. So, for now, we’re just looking at what the Republicans want to do. But it’s sad that we have to shut down everything on any issue, especially on the border, while they have this internal debate.”
