Sacheen Littlefeather, Native American activist who turned down the 1973 Oscar, has died

Sacheen Littlefeather, a Native American activist who turned down Marlon Brando’s Best Actor Oscar in 1973, died Sunday at age 75, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tweeted.

Littlefeather, who turned down Brando’s award for his role in “The Godfather” on his behalf, spoke onstage about the treatment of Native Americans by the film industry nearly 50 years ago.

She was later the subject of boos and criticism after her speech.

“I never thought I would live to see the day I would hear this, experience this,” Littlefeather said.

“When I was on the podium in 1973, I was standing there alone.”
