DUBLIN, April 5 (Reuters)Ryanair RYA.I expects average airfares during this year’s peak summer season to be 5-10% higher than pre-pandemic prices during the same period of 2019, the group’s chief executive said on Tuesday, Michael O’Leary.

Reduced capacity and increased passenger demand are already driving up fares for those booking flights from June, O’Leary told the Irish Independent newspaper, citing “very strong” forward bookings.

“What we’re seeing right now is that prices are slightly lower than they were in 2019, pre-COVID, through March, April and May. They’re currently between 5% and 10% higher high through June, July, August and September,” O’Leary said.

“I think fares will increase this year during the peak summer months by 5-10 percent.”

Ireland’s low-cost airline, Europe’s largest by passenger numbers, announced on Monday that its passenger numbers had exceeded pre-pandemic levels for the first time last month.

O’Leary, who told the newspaper he had no plans to retire after nearly 30 years at the helm, said it would be too optimistic to say COVID-19 is over for the airline industry, but he doesn’t expect COVID-19 to be scary. the summer.

“Travel is picking up strongly. I think people are fed up. We’ve been locked at home for two years on Zoom calls. They want to go back on trips. Families want to go back on vacation,” he said.

“We see it very strongly over Easter and also this summer. Forward bookings are very strong, but I think there will still be some disruption.”
