Ryan Garcia knocks out Javier Fortuna to set up Gervonta Davis fight as Tony Bellew compares his hand speed to Amir Khan

Ryan Garcia picked up arguably the biggest victory of his career on Saturday night when he knocked out former WBA super featherweight champion Javier Fortuna.

The 23-year-old dropped Fortuna in the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds before the fight at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles was ruled out by referee Jerry Cantu after counting out the Dominican fighter.

Former WBC cruiserweight champion and boxing commentator Tony Bellew was particularly impressed with one facet of Garcia’s game – his hand speed.

The 39-year-old paid the youngster a huge compliment as he compared Garcia to Amir Khan, who in his prime had lightning-fast hands that dazzled his opponents and helped him become a unified champion at 140lbs.

“His speed is 🔥🔥🔥 I haven’t seen hands like this since Amir,” Bellew commented on a DAZN post showing the final seconds of Garcia’s fight against Fortuna.

Garcia hopes to follow in Khan’s footsteps after committing his long-term future to the 140-pound division.

“King” has competed as a lightweight for most of his career, but says he is now done with that weight class.

He hopes to fight Gervonta Davis next, but made it clear after the fight that he would not be down to 135 pounds in order to make the match a success.

“I’m never going back down to 135, I’m going to stay at 140, I’m going to fight ‘Tank’ Davis if he wants to at 140. And if he doesn’t, then I’m going to go fight some 140-pounder,” said Garcia said.

“But he’s going to want to do it. There’s going to be riots if he doesn’t want to. I know I’m committed to it and I’ve told everyone that’s where my heart is positioned and I’m not going to shy away from it for anyone.

‘Tank’ stopped Mario Barrios for a secondary 140-pound title in June 2021, and appears to have no problem returning to the division for a fight with Garcia.

“At the end of the year.. #TheONE,” Davis wrote on social media after watching Garcia improve his perfect record to 23-0.
