Russian ‘scorched earth’ missile attack damages power plants in Ukraine – POLITICO
Ukrainian air defense forces managed to shoot down 84 of 99 missiles and drones that Russia fired at Ukraine overnight on Friday, Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk said in a statement.
The assault involved 60 drones and 39 missiles of various types, including three Kh-47M2 Kinzhal air-launched hypersonic ballistic missiles. The missiles came from Russia’s Ryazan, Kursk and Belgorod regions, as well as the occupied Crimean peninsula.
“The enemy attacked energy facilities in the Dnipropetrovsk, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. Thermal power plants and substations were damaged, leaving utilities, local industry and the population without electricity,” Ukraine’s Energy Ministry wrote.
The electricity shortages were caused by hostilities in the Vinnytsia, Donetsk, Kharkiv and Kherson regions, state energy company Ukrenergo reported.
This year, Russian attacks on energy infrastructure have become more precise and more deadly, DTEK operational director Dmytro Sakharuk said at a conference in kyiv on Thursday.
“The precision of the missiles is impressive,” Sakharuk said. If previously they landed 100 or 200 meters from the target, more recently they landed about 1 meter away, he explained.
“The damage is enormous. No roofs, no equipment, just a simple field left in our facilities after the strikes… scorched earth,” he added.
