Russian oligarchs could be stripped of EU citizenship under new proposal

Russian oligarchs could have their European Union citizenship revoked under a proposal announced by the bloc’s executive on Monday.

Some member countries have golden passport schemes that allow wealthy people to buy citizenship in the EU, the Associated Press reported.

The European Commission has recommended that these countries assess whether to withdraw citizenship rights from individuals among the hundreds of sanctioned Russians and Belarusians – or those who support the Russian-Ukrainian war – who may have obtained EU citizenship through these programs.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
