In Russia, a mother of three has entered the race against Vladimir Putin in the 2024 presidential election.
Ekaterina Duntsova, 40, a political foreigner, enters the fray with no experience of Russian politics and no ties to established parties.
Duntsova’s program calls for an end to the war in Ukraine, democratization and the release of political prisoners.
She faces a Kremlin power that regularly rigs elections to ensure that Putin, 71, remains in power.
However, the 40-year-old newcomer believes age, gender and lack of political experience could work in her favor in the next contest.
The lawyer and journalist of Siberian origin said: “Why did I make this decision? I love our country, I want Russia to be a prosperous democratic and peaceful state.
“But right now our country is moving in a completely different direction, I understand that many now want to wait… but we must act…
“Let’s at least try! Let’s try to win this ‘election’!”
Duntsova was forced to meet with prosecutors, a likely sign of Kremlin concern, and was asked about her position on Putin’s war in Ukraine.
While asserting her constitutional right to remain silent, she confirmed ownership of her social media account in a signed statement.
She told The Moscow Times newspaper: “There have been questions about my wording regarding war and peace, as well as how I feel about the SVO (military invasion of Ukraine). I said I would not answer and referred to Article 51 of the Constitution. ,
“I am appalled that so many women are facing criminal charges.”
