Russian hurricane criticized for illegal boxing move (VIDEO) – RT Sport News

Maria Cecchi headbutted her opponent in European super bantamweight title fight

Boxing fans piled on Maria ‘Russian Hurricane’ Cecchi after she landed a headbutt on her unprotected opponent.

Representing Italy, Cecchi faced Spanish foe Mary Romero for the EBU European super bantamweight title in Milan on Friday.

At one point in the rambling affair that fans even booed, Cecchi lost her temper when the ref pulled them apart in a clinch where Cecchi brought her back to Romero.

In a moment of madness, the 26-year-old decided to headbutt Romero and ended up being docked by two points.

Bottom of the cards in any event, Cecchi suffered a first career loss with his record now 7-1 after the judges scored a 100-88, 100-88, 98-90 unanimous decision in favor of Romero.

On Twitter, boxing fans blasted Cecchi for his outburst with former heavyweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli calling him out to be “ejected” after landing his best shot “All night long” in the middle of “shit” herself during the fight.

“Maria Cecchi should be suspended or something for that deliberate headbutt. And the referee too for being an idiot,” raged a fan.

“That should be a disqualification”, says another, about ‘Absolutely shameful header from Cecchi’.

“Talking before the fight about how she loves sweet science and is a pure boxer and [then] pulls off a stunt like that and made the fight rambling as hell. Shocking,” it was added.

“Cecchi was horrible tonight” started another review. “Very, very far from what she normally looks like. Holding, headbutting… terrible performance for her. Absolutely terrible.”

On Instagram, Cecchi posted a long message asking “all my people for forgiveness”.

“I apologize to my coaches, people who chose to help me just one month from the title [fight] and gave the best of themselves despite the great difficulties”, she continued.
“And I can say this concretely, it was the best month of my life. I didn’t miss anything. But sometimes the results take longer than what we are allowed. It was not my night. for this confusion, Cecchi admitted.

“I’ve been through much worse times, anyone who knows me knows that. God is great. We’ll come back to shine,” she signed, before sending “hugs to all”.

Retaining her belt in a second defense, Romero improved to 8-2 and looks set to go six years unbeaten.
