Russia threatens to charge chess grandmaster Kasparov under ‘foreign agents’ law – POLITICO

Former world chess champion Garry Kasparov could be charged by Russian authorities for violating the Kremlin’s law on “foreign agents”, the TASS news agency reported on Sunday.

There are “every reason” to prosecute Kasparov, Russian law enforcement officials told state media, without providing further details. They added that the US-based Kremlin critic could be sentenced to two years in prison.

Kasparov was “arrested in absentia” in April, along with an environmental activist, former member of the Russian Duma and co-founder of an anti-Kremlin NGO, according to the TASS agency. The four men were accused of “running a terrorist company, financing terrorist activities and publicly justifying them,” according to the press release.

The Foreign Agents Act requires anyone identified as benefiting from foreign support or influence to register with the Justice Department and declare themselves a foreign agent, subject to heavy bureaucracy and government oversight. ‘State.

The chess grandmaster has been on this list since May 2022, after co-founding the Russian Anti-War Committee.
