Russia could soon ‘break’ Ukraine’s defenses – Spiegel – RT World News

The German spy agency has warned that Russian troops could seize all of Donbass within four or five weeks, the media reports

Russian troops could soon wrest the rest of the Donbass region from Ukrainian forces, Germany’s foreign intelligence agency, the BND, has warned, according to a report by Der Spiegel magazine.

The report cites recent classified BND briefings saying the agency “fears that the Ukrainian resistance will even be broken in the next four to five weeks.”

“BND analysts have noted that although the Russians are moving much more slowly than they did at the start of the war, they are able to conquer small chunks of territory each day,” says Der Spiegel.

The BND thinks it is possible that Putin’s troops could bring all of Donbass under their control by August.

The report further indicates that it does “a huge difference” to the situation on the battlefield when heavier German weapons are delivered.

Russian forces steadily advanced into the Donbass, closing in on the city of Severodonetsk and pushing Ukrainian troops west.

Speaking ahead of a meeting with German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht on Friday, Ruslan Stefanchuk, speaker of Ukraine’s parliament, said the “the supply of the most modern equipment to Ukraine” and a quick decision on the matter will bring “common victory” on Russia closer.

Moscow has repeatedly warned the West against “pump” Ukraine with weapons, arguing that this will only prolong the conflict.

Russia attacked the neighboring state in late February, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, first signed in 2014, and Moscow’s eventual recognition of the republics from the Donbass of Donetsk and Lugansk. The protocols negotiated by Germany and France were designed to give breakaway regions a special status within the Ukrainian state.

The Kremlin has since demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. kyiv insists the Russian offensive was unprovoked and has denied claims it planned to retake the two republics by force.
