Russia continues gains in eastern Ukraine as Kyiv eyes backlash from south

Russian forces continued their offensive in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine on Saturday, pushing the town of Bakhmut as Kyiv tries to seize the initiative by opening a front in the south.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said Russia was deploying tanks, artillery and fighter jets to support an advance on Bakhmut and Avdiivka. Authorities of the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic – a small Moscow-backed state formed in 2014 – said its troops had occupied several bridgeheads in the nearby town of Soledar and were carrying out reconnaissance in Bakhmut.
