Voice: I’m a comedian – Russell Brand allegations are just the beginning

Women in comedy work hard to protect themselves and each other from problematic male colleagues, writes comedian Vix Leyton.

Will the allegations against Russell Brand spark the change the industry needs?

“Rather, it’s a depressing indictment of the fact that, for all the talk about how much time has passed, many people didn’t want to believe women – especially when they accused people they admired – and didn’t I only started listening when a man spoke out about this. The risk to Daniel Sloss is far less than to the women who came forward on Channel 4 and the incredible journalists who worked so hard to get this story out.

“It’s a horrible time to be a woman in comedy right now, and the most depressing thing is that when the furore around this specific incident has died down, we know very little will have changed.”

Voices: Why I’m not surprised by Russell Brand’s allegations

“Unless you’ve been living under a rock, by now you’ll have heard about MeToo’s latest ‘bombshell’ revelations, targeting none other than former ‘lothario’ and self-confessed sex addict, Russell Brand.

“You will probably have watched them too: Channel 4 Dispatches published its “special investigation” on Saturday evening containing a series of damning allegations about Brand, as part of a joint investigation with the Sunday hours. It included allegations of rape, sexual assault and abuse. Brand denies the accusations. For serious allegations to be made about a well-known comedian is huge. It’s shocking. But surprising? Not really.”
