Runners react to Chicago half marathon being too short – NBC Chicago

After finding out that last weekend’s HOKA Chicago Half Marathon had a shorter course than an actual half marathon, many runners are asking race organizers for an explanation.

“It was frustrating, I worked really hard, I paid a lot of money to run 13.1 miles, not 12.6. So I feel like I was cheated by this experience” , said runner Jessie Steele.

Several runners told NBC 5 that the problem started near mile marker 7, with each subsequent mile marker being half a mile away.

“There were people running their first half marathon, for them to realize that they didn’t go the distance, it’s pretty devastating,” runner Stephanie Tsai said.

Several runners started pointing out that their distance trackers fell a little short of the 13.1 miles to complete a half marathon, but they still ran from the start line to the finish line.

“Everyone on my Strava ran 12.64 miles. [Were] are things a little short today?” a runner commented on the event’s Instagram page.

Other runners began to respond to the message by recognizing similar distances.

Organizers responded by saying the runners were actually right – the race was not 13.1 miles.

“A required last minute course change has been implemented due to unforeseen circumstances in partnership with the City of Chicago,” read a commentary to the official event report. “The impact of this change has been a reduction in the total distance of the course. We apologize for any inconvenience as we have chosen to prioritize athlete safety.”

Several runners have expressed frustration with the lack of notification about the distance change and others have asked for refunds.

“You chose to keep athletes in the dark and hope no one noticed. We paid for a half marathon not 12.65,” one user wrote.

Another TikTok user asked why runners weren’t notified.

“I think I can speak for a lot of people when I say this is very disappointing and I think we deserve answers,” the user said in her video, which now has nearly 40,000 views.

Race organizers did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s request for comment on the matter. The HOKA Chicago Half Marathon is not affiliated with the upcoming Bank of America Chicago Marathon or Bank of America 13.1.
