Ruben Dias will be one of five Manchester Cty players to share the captain’s armband this season, manager Pep Guardiola has said.
Dias, who signed a new six-year contract this summer, joined City from Benfica last year and has been a mainstay of Guardiola’s defense as he helped the club win the Premier League title.
The Portuguese defender, named Premier League player of the season as well as England’s footballer of the year in a stellar debut campaign, led the team 6-3 on Wednesday against RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
“Everyone has to be their own leader,” Guardiola told the club’s website on Friday. “Each season we select the captains. The players and the staff behind the scenes make the decision.
“Eleven months and a week, we’re all here together, and they know who’s the best to represent the team. We all pick our five captains.”
Dias, 24, said he was proud to be named one of the captains and ready to take on this responsibility.
“It’s definitely a big responsibility and I’ll do my best to be there for everyone,” he said.
City, fifth in the table after four games, will host Southampton on Saturday.
City vs Soton preview: Stones, Laporte out, long returns
Champions Manchester City are again deprived of defenders John Stones and Aymeric Laporte for Southampton’s visit to the Premier League.
Both men are still troubled by the muscle injuries that kept them from facing RB Leipzig in the Champions League midweek.
Center-back Nathan Ake, whose father died during the game on Wednesday, is expected to be available. Second-choice goalkeeper Zack Steffen is still out after testing positive for coronavirus.
Forward Shane Long will be available for Southampton after completing his isolation following a positive Covid-19 test.
Midfielder Will Smallbone is back in full squad training after eight months on the sidelines with a serious knee injury, but he shouldn’t be rushed into the game.
Winger Theo Walcott and midfielder Stuart Armstrong are still on the sidelines due to calf muscle issues.
