Roy Keane says Manchester United should target Harry Kane and Jack Grealish this summer if they want to mount a challenge for the Premier League title next season.
Manchester City need two more points to be confirmed as champions, with Pep Guardiola’s side 13 points ahead of their neighbors having played one more game after United’s game against Liverpool at Old Trafford was postponed on Sunday.
Keane has been asked what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side need to compete with City next season, and the former United midfielder believes Kane and Grealish would narrow the gap to their title rivals considerably.
“I always feel like they’re two or three away from challenging Man City,” Keane said. Sky Sports. “They’re short. They still need a world-class striker, they need another midfielder and maybe also a center-half. But I would prioritize a striker and a midfielder. ground.”
“The two players I’ve been thinking about over the past few weeks who I think would be brilliant for Man Utd are Harry Kane up front – whatever the cost – and I would go with Jack Grealish. that United are still running out of I think Grealish would give them that and I think he would like to play at Old Trafford.
“The fans would love him. What I admire about Jack is that he has a lot of courage on the football field. He always wants the ball in tight spaces. We’ve seen for a year or two that his final product has improved, he’s an excellent player and obviously Kane would guarantee goals.
“Would it be difficult to have these two players? You bet it would be your life, but Man Utd have to come out and try to sign the best or we’ll have the same conversations next year about being almost there Jack would be ready for Man Utd He did well for Aston Villa, a brilliant club that are doing very well, but Jack must be selfish.
“He must seek to move to the next level.”
Keane believes Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Grealish could all play on the same team, but added: “If there’s a problem with having one or two too many then they can move Pogba. Why not? If Grealish come in, get rid of one or two of them.
“They are a little worried about Pogba’s contract with him entering his final year, but if they want to cash in on it then do it this summer. You can’t have enough quality players at a club like Man Utd.
“When I was successful here we had about four forwards and nobody cared where we would put them. It was a nice problem to have when trying to win big prizes. Man Utd didn’t. proven, they can dispute.
“There has been a great improvement over the past year for Ole, but the next step is the most important and the most difficult for the club.
“I still think they need a center-half but their priority would be to have two attacking players and they’re going to have to spend around £ 200million to get the two players I mentioned.”
“They need another center-half, with a little more rhythm. That’s the problem for United as they will want to be able to get higher on the pitch. They are constantly worried in big games using two seated midfielders and that’s because they worry about the two center halves – more with their pace than anything else.
“They are good strong defenders, especially [Harry] Maguire, but when it comes to the really big games, it’s a problem for Manchester United. They will have to find someone, of course. “
Would Grealish fit in with Man Utd?
Of the prospect of Grealish joining United, Micah Richards said: “Jack is one of the best players I’ve played with – not just among young players. The way he beats people, he hasn’t. not afraid to give the ball and his numbers, the Villa team have become stronger, but he’s an incredible talent and he’s also an even better person.
“To come and fit into a locker room in Man Utd or elsewhere, he has the dynamism and determination to be the best. There were times he didn’t do much in the gym, but now he’s a lot stronger. , he buys a lot of faults and he worked really hard in training.
“There was a bit before in his personal life, but when it comes to football he is totally motivated to do his best. If he left Villa he would be able to handle it at the highest level.”
Jamie Carragher is still not convinced Grealish would be suitable for a move to United, saying Sky Sports: “I don’t think he would fit in at Old Trafford, not because he’s not a good player but because of who they already have at the club.
“They already have Paul Pogba playing on the left, they have Fernandes and they have Marcus Rashford who likes to play on the left.”
“I don’t think he’s a must-have for Manchester United but he definitely has the quality. Grealish likes to run with the ball and there aren’t too many players like that.”
When asked who should be No 1 at Old Trafford next season, Keane added: “I would always give the young goalkeeper [Dean] Henderson a chance. Why not?
“I would give him another season because there are other positions that are more important. He’s been on loan, he’s been in the background. OK, he’s made a couple of mistakes the last few weeks, but he’s been on loan. deserves a chance. ” “
