Roy Keane linked with managerial return to Hibernian as Manchester United legend seeks career boost

Manchester United legend Roy Keane could be set for a managerial return with Hibernian after Shaun Maloney was sacked.

Maloney, 39, took charge of 19 matches and was relieved of his duties by the Scottish Premiership club after just four months in charge.

The Times reports that Red Devils legend Keane would like the role, having chatted with close friends in recent days.

A regular TV pundit on Sky Sports, Keane has not been a manager since being sacked by Ipswich Town in 2011.

Before taking the reins at Portman Road, he also had a stint in Sunderland, spending two years at Wearside.

He has also held assistant manager positions with the Republic of Ireland, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

David Gray took over from Maloney for the final games of the current campaign and started with a 1-0 win over St Mirren.

A club statement on the decision to sack Maloney read: “Our hope in appointing Shaun Maloney as a much-loved young manager was that he would help us move the club forward, but ultimately it didn’t work.

“We thank Shaun and his coaching staff for all their hard work and effort and wish them all the best for the future.”

Hibs have four games left to play this season and want to finish the campaign as high as possible.

They travel to the Tony Macaroni Arena next weekend to take on Livingston and then host Aberdeen at Easter Road on May 7.

Hibs next face Dundee in midweek, before taking on St Johnstone in their final home league game on May 15.

It remains to be seen whether Keane decides to take on the role in the Scottish capital, but it looks like his time as a pundit could soon come to a temporary end.
