Rory McIlroy will be the reigning Players Championship champion this week after winning TPC Sawgrass in 2019, but he admits he “lacks spark” at the moment.

The Northern Irishman hasn’t won since November 2019 and, although he ended up in the top 10 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, he admits there is something missing in his game.

McIlroy was well positioned to mount a final round challenge at Bay Hill, but saw his hopes come to an end after twice finding the par five sixth water en route to a double bogey.

He also shuffled five bogeys with three birdies in a four of 76 that left him eight strokes behind winner Bryson DeChambeau.

“There were still some good games this week,” said McIlroy. “Stuff I don’t know how to describe it, but just a little bit down on it or maybe looking to go in a different direction.

“I don’t know. I need something, I need a spark, I need something and I don’t seem to have it. Some days it’s good, some days it’s not. .

“So I’m going to go [Sawgrass] tomorrow train and get ready for next week. “

The players’ championship was scrapped last year after a round due to the coronavirus pandemic and McIlroy is happy to play in front of a crowd, albeit with reduced capacity, once again in Florida.

He added: “I’m really happy that we played this week in that kind of atmosphere and in this environment. I missed it a lot. Even though it’s only 25% capacity this week, it’s so much more than that and it’s great to play in front of it, can’t wait to do it again next week.

“I think we all sort of see a light at the end of the tunnel now where things can at least get back to some sort of normalcy very soon. But I can’t believe it’s been a year.

“It will be surreal to look back 20 years and see what we’ve been through. But I just can’t wait for things to get back to normal.”

Jordan Spieth has not won since the Open Championship 2017

“I thought I played really well,” he said. “I thought I played a really solid round of golf. I trusted a lot of hard shots, hitting a lot of good ones. Hit my lines at almost every putt and nothing happened. And then finish five, five, four, five, just, it stings.

“I kind of want to break something, but I’m going to look back in a very positive way at the way my attitude today, the way I walked, the confidence I took in every hit, again, that will serve me well. moving forward. I took a step in the right direction today, whatever the outcome. “
