Ronald Koeman has confirmed that Barcelona have “almost” finalized the signing of Memphis Depay.
The Dutch forward looks set to join the La Liga giants on a free transfer after letting his contract expire at Lyon.
The former Manchester United man, who had also been linked with moves to Chelsea and Juventus, worked under compatriot Koeman during the latter’s tenure in charge of the Netherlands between 2018 and 2020.
Speaking earlier this week, Depay revealed his desire to work with Koeman again.
He said: “As I said before, the transfer will become clear on its own. That remains to be seen, I want to stop there.
“Everyone knows that I have been linked to them [Barcelona] for a long time and want to play under Ronald Koeman. Let’s wait and see. Then the news will come of itself.
Responding to Depay’s comments, Koeman gave the biggest indication yet that the player will join Barcelona.
He told reporters: “Memphis said something about it today and I can confirm it.
“It’s not signed yet, but it’s almost there. I wanted to have it in January, if it happens now that’s great.
“We know what we can do together.
Since leaving Man United for Lyon in 2017, Depay has scored 63 goals in 139 league appearances.
The 27-year-old, who is capable of playing as a winger or central striker, opened his Euro 2020 account with a penalty kick in a 2-0 win over Austria as the Netherlands advanced to the last 16 Thursday.
