The victory came with their summer signing of £ 98million, which scored their fourth goal in as many games since returning to Stamford Bridge.

After 69 minutes without a chance, Cesar Azpilicueta put the ball into the box and Lukaku converted a stunning header.

“Lukaku rises majestically, jumps beautifully and then passes the goalkeeper,” former Chelsea striker Andy Townsend said in a comment.

“He’s been back to goal for 70 minutes.

“Sometimes you just have to take a chance and put it in there.

“Chelsea tried to find a solution and try to pass, pass, pass.

“Every now and then just put it in there and have the best player feel something, feel something and go do it.

“That’s exactly what the main man just did.”

Zenit left possession of Chelsea, but they were comfortable right up to goal and often effective at the break.

Substitute Artem Dzyuba nearly equalized late in the game when the forward pushed narrowly from close range.

But just like against Aston Villa, Thomas Tuchel’s side found a way to win without being at their best.
