Romelu Lukaku scores on his second Inter Milan debut after Timo Werner did the same for Leipzig with former Chelsea strike partners showing they still have it

Romelu Lukaku scored just 81 seconds into his second Inter Milan debut, copying former Chelsea team-mate Timo Werner.

Werner had made a £25million return to Leipzig earlier this week and scored on his second debut, with a 35-yard effort in a 2-2 draw with FC Koln.

If that wasn’t hard enough for Chelsea to bear, then-record £97.5million Lukaku did the same on his return to Inter.

Both forwards were seen as solutions to Chelsea’s long-term attacking problems and there were hopes of a dream partnership, but it all fell apart.

Returns to Inter and Leipzig beckoned after poor seasons for both, returning to clubs where they made a name for themselves as Europe’s top strikers.

And the pair continued where they left off, with early goals on their second debut.

Werner is Leipzig’s all-time leading goalscorer having completed his first spell at the club with 95 goals to his name when he moved to Chelsea in the summer of 2020, a tally well above the 23 he managed in two years at Stamford Bridge.

Now that he is back in the Bundesliga, he hasn’t missed a thing.

RB Leipzig were hosting Cologne in their second league game of the season when the 26-year-old appeared with a goal to put them 1-0 up.

Picking up the ball around 35 yards from goal, Werner sent a side-footed effort towards goal which Marvin Schwabe made a real mess of as he raced into the back of his net.

Werner could hardly believe his luck as he walked away in a modest celebration, joined by his teammates.

Lukaku had an equally easy opener for Inter, nodding in a knockdown of Matteo Darmian inches from the goal line against Lecce.

The Belgian scored almost from the kick-off for last year’s Serie A finalists, having joined a club where he played his best football before his struggles at Stamford Bridge.
