Romanian fighter jet goes missing in south-east, helicopter crashes during search and rescue

A Romanian MiG-21 LanceR fighter jet disappeared from radar in the southeastern region of Dobrogea on Wednesday evening, the country’s defense ministry said. The accident was followed by the crash of an IAR 330 Puma helicopter, dispatched to locate the aircraft.

The fighter jet, which is an Israeli-upgraded version of the iconic 1960s Soviet aircraft, disappeared about 15 minutes after taking off and heading for a patrol in the coastal region bordering Ukraine. A search and rescue mission was launched, with the helicopter dispatched to find the jet.

The helicopter, however, also disappeared about 20 minutes into its mission, the military said. Before communications were lost, her pilot reported extremely bad weather in the area.

The helicopter was confirmed to have crashed about two hours later, with the country’s defense minister, Vasile Dincu, offering his condolences to the victims of the accident.

“Today is a sad day for the Romanian army family. The five crew members of the IAR 330-Puma helicopter, on a search and rescue mission from the MiG 21 LanceR aircraft, were found dead in the Gura Dobrogea region, about 11 km from the aerodrome. said the Minister of Defense.

However, local media reports the death toll is even higher, suggesting that seven people were killed in the helicopter crash. Images released by the media show the hull of the helicopter, apparently badly damaged during the impact, engulfed in flames.

The MiG-21 LanceR jet, at the time of writing, remains missing, with the military continuing efforts to locate the aircraft and its pilot.
