The Rock Island High School boys’ soccer team had to reschedule a game on Thursday after the team rallied to support players who were not allowed to board the bus while holding a Mexican flag.
Mexico’s Independence Day is September 16.
The rest of the team got off the bus and refused to board, causing the team to miss their game, which was rescheduled.
“With everything that has happened, our RIHS football team and head coach have behaved with respect and dignity. Our students shouldn’t have to endure this kind of prejudice and racism,” Lawrence said. “The Rock Island-Milan School District is a multi-nation school district, and we are here to support our students … Racism is counterproductive to our values, and we must do everything in our power to make it happen. end.”
