The Super League has announced that executive chairman Robert Elstone will step down from the board on Friday.

The announcement comes just over three weeks since the former CEO of Everton tendered his resignation.

The 57-year-old had held the post since June 2018, but had recently come under increasing pressure to resign.

In a statement released by the league, Elstone said: “I am grateful to the Super League Council for giving me the opportunity to do the job I always wanted and I will return with great pride to what has been accomplished since I joined the Super League, when he started his new journey almost three years ago.

“I would also like to thank my colleagues, clubs, coaches and players, as well as our excellent partners for their unwavering commitment to the Super League. They made my time in the Super League enjoyable and fulfilling and I leave with a lot of wonderful
memories.

“The Rugby League will always be in my blood and, as I have always believed for as long as I can remember, it has a bright and exciting future. I can’t wait to see this unfold.”
