The Fowler-Carragher Academy, overseen by former Liverpool players Robbie Fowler and Jamie Carragher, will take on operational responsibilities for the club’s former training ground in Melwood.
Liverpool officially moved to a brand new facility in Kirkby in November 2020 and Melwood will now offer a range of training and education opportunities.
The Academy will work with partners, especially in swimming! and Beth Tweddle Gymnastics – led by former British Olympians Steve Parry and Beth Tweddle respectively – which will launch sports centers from the site.
The joint venture, which also includes the Torus Northwest Housing and Regeneration Group, will provide space for young people in the Liverpool City area, while Melwood will also become a university site.
Discussing the announcement, Fowler and Carragher said: “Partnering with Torus to kick off the next chapter in Melwood’s story was a natural fit for Fowler-Carragher Academy and our mission to empower local children and youth. opportunities to aspire and succeed.
“We are extremely pleased to offer the unique offer of a fantastic education alongside a professional football program supported by sports science experts.”
Those involved hope to revive the facilities, preserve the site’s future and introduce young people to new sports.
The development of the site has been the subject of two rounds of community consultations and Torus Managing Director Steve Coffey added: “Melwood is an iconic site – for West Derby, for Liverpool and for Torus.
“We called our community consultation ‘a legacy beyond football’ to underscore our vision for a historic housing-focused program.
“Maintaining a strong sporting bond has always been high on our list of priorities.”
